Meet Your Councillors

Carmangay has been my home for most of my life, and I want to continue to make it a place that everyone is proud to have as a home.

I would like to see Carmangay grow and prosper and will work with the various organizations that I belong to that can make that happen.

I am very happy to have an administration and village manager that make our job more productive.

My name is Kym Nichols, and I am proud to call Carmangay my lifelong home. As a fourth-generation resident, I have a deep-rooted commitment to our village and its future.

I have served on Council since 2007, with the exception of one term I took off to prioritize time with my family while my children were in high school. Throughout my time in public service, I’ve also remained active with various community groups and initiatives.

Leading meaningful projects in a small community with limited resources is never easy — but it is possible when people work together. I’ve had the privilege of being part of several transformative initiatives, including the creation of a regional water commission and the replacement of major water and sewer infrastructure along Grand Avenue and Elmore Street.

One of the accomplishments I’m most proud of is the establishment of a community-run grocery store, developed through the incredible support of local groups and dedicated volunteers. The store, which operated until the school reopened in 2012, reinvested 100% of its profits into local projects — a true example of what we can achieve together.

I believe the heart of any great community is its people — and the shared vision we hold for an even greater future. I’m running for Council again because I believe in Carmangay. We are fortunate to have an excellent administration and public works team, and I’m proud of what we’re achieving together.

Looking ahead, I want to continue building on our momentum. I am committed to supporting smart, sustainable residential and commercial growth, and I will advocate for attracting viable businesses that meet the needs of our residents and contribute to the vibrancy of our village.

Together, we can ensure Carmangay remains a great — and affordable — place to live, now and for future generations.

After living in multiple cities and countries Sue Brown moved to Carmangay in 2022 looking for a sense of community to retire in. She has always been actively involved in every community she has lived in as she feels service is paramount to a life well lived.

Focusing on solutions rather than concentrating on the problem, Sue has always risen to leadership positions both in her volunteer and career roles including; District President of Scouts Canada; Office Manager with the Kootenay ICE Major Junior Hockey team; Reception Center Manager with BC’s Disaster Emergency Social Services (ESS); and Project Manager for three building renovations with Wood Buffalo Environmental Association totalling over $2 million, as well as developing the company’s Health and Safety plan. She was promoted to both the Provincial and National disaster emergency teams with the Canadian Red Cross and was sent to New York after the 9-11 attacks. Sue is level-headed, logical and calm in a crisis.

Sue believes that with the increasing lack of affordability for families living in bigger centers we are in a renaissance for small villages. She wants to help attract young families and small business to the Village without losing the sense of community that makes this Village the wonderful place we call home.
